About

I know the idea of a blog seems a bit pretencious.   Please forgive me.

I very rarely proof read this stuff, (or have been drinking) so please, if I break a few rules, let me slide.

I made the decision to try and enter the 2009 NY City Marathon at the age of 40. Frankly I was gaining weight and for the first time in my life had become inactive due to job and children.  I decided in Nov that I was going to try and get myself in really good shape and see if that would give me the energy I once had in my twenties. Also, I have a friend who was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma in May of 08 and that has had a dramatic impact on how I see life in general. It made me appreciate my health and I really found it hard to not take advantage of it knowing how much my friend would do anything to have his back. In a way I would say I am running this marathon for us. Robert Cudd is my friend’s name and if you would like to follow his status you can read about him and his amazing family at www.robertcudd.com.

I had marked off Jan 5 as my target date to begin this process and that’s where we begin for those who care……….

I live in  Midland, TX with my wife Lori and three children. Konner (F)11, Carter 7, and Jett 3. I work in the Oil and Gas industry and my wife teaches 1st grade in the public school system.

  1. Hi I m English I ran NYC marathon in 2008 for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. It was awesome.
I was diagnosed with choroidal melanoma 2006 its like skin melanoma but more resistent to treatment than skin melanoma but usually slower but can kill you any time.
I ran for LAF because – I had trouble accepting that as I had a rare cancer (3 per million)the NHS does not feel it is cost effective to try and alter the outcome. Its hard for docs and nurses to accept that so they are economical with the truth. That was hard with me as I m a doctor and seen it before. I mean what do you say when someone tells you something you know is untrue and you know that they are aware of your knowledge.
I like the fact that the LAF believe in every second of my life believe that I should be informed that knowledge is power. Through the support I recieved from them so far I have a better outcome as I have been able to acquire treatment not usually offered as patients are not informed also I have been very lucky.
Train hard remember to suffer in the training because you will suffer in the last 6 miles but it was a fantastatic day – take a sleeping bag to the early start its cold and dark and if you like bagels your ok otherwise take food. Good luck and have fun.
